The Frosh is the story of James, a non-religious gay freshman who is sent by his parents to this very conservative Christian college called St. Dominic. James tries to keep his sexuality hidden especially after some bad experiences in high school. There will be lots of challenges for him to face; a hot roommate who barely speaks to him, A new friend that he is attracted to, A bully from his high school, and his own wild and kinky desires. The story is a first-person narration told from James’ perspective. I have not read before anything for Thomas Carver, but I can say that in this book, the college atmosphere, the distinct characters, and the action scenes were all top-notch.
The main character James is a shy guy from outside, but he has some deep lust and desires. You can tell that from his narration. The reader can’t help it but feel sympathy for him when it needed and root for him at other times. I liked him a lot, and wanted him to fulfill his desires, both the romantic and the sleazy ones! 😁. He’s a virgin gay boy who is surrounded in that college by guys and jocks his own age, so you can imagine what could happen. Sometimes he kept questioning himself but I was glad to see that many times he just had to go with the flow and give in to those desires even if they felt wrong for him. His first day in the college he settles in his room which he shares with this hot muscular jock called Brad. Finally, James gets kicked out of college and he knows who is behind all that but he is not sorry for leaving this place which he never liked. He also finds out that his friend Jesse was kicked out too! The two open up to each other. Jesse had known James very well, all his desires and needs. He was ready to fulfill them for him. He knew James gets off the best when guys are mean to him in sex and he was ready for it. This scene in which these two characters bond together for the first time in a sexual way is super erotic despite not being long. The Frosh is a story about self-discovery, dealing with desires, sexuality, and lots of conflicts from the outside and the inside. All that is wrapped up in such a hot homoerotic package. The characters are so well written, not only the main ones but all the secondary characters as well. I could make a clear picture in my mind for Martin, Taylor, Brad, etc, as each one of them represented a kind of the guys you must’ve met or come across at college or university. Thomas Carver created such a fantastic setup along with these characters. I had the feeling that I was there too, living with them in St. Dominic college. Things felt real and vivid. After all, we read books to experience this, to escape from our own world and dive inside the world that the author has crafted for us, and when a story is able to achieve that you know you have a winner. Thomas Carver has written many books that are set in college which feature young men as his protagonists. I’m definitely going to read more of his books in the future. The Frosh is just the first of many.
